RFID Retrofit of Shelves and Stockers: Technical Background

RFID shelf for semiconductor industry to store carrier boxesIn semiconductor fabs, shelves, storage systems, and conveyors often require identification at many individual positions.

Conventional RFID installations typically use separate antennas, RFID readers, and placement sensors, which results in high cabling effort, increased space requirements, and higher system costs.

Especially in existing installations, this complexity makes cost efficient RFID retrofitting difficult.

Product Description – LF-134-CAN-ANT

LF-134-CAN-ANT LF RFID reader with integrated antenna and placement sensor for CAN bus–based semiconductor shelf retrofit.

The LF-134-CAN-ANT is an RFID reader for semiconductor shelf, stocker and conveyor retrofit (CAN bus) with an integrated antenna and an integrated placement sensor.
This full integration reduces the need for external components, minimizes cabling effort, and enables a serial CAN bus topology. As a result, a large number of RFID identification points can be implemented efficiently and in a scalable way.

Functions and Features

  • The LF RFID reader reads and writes transponders at 134.2 kHz, enabling reliable identification directly at the storage position.
  • The integrated antenna eliminates the need for external antenna cabling, reducing installation effort and potential failure points.
  • The integrated 3D ToF placement sensor detects occupancy from multiple directions and supports flexible mounting orientations.
  • The CAN bus interface enables serial wiring of multiple RFID readers using only one cable per device.
  • The compact form factor allows installation even in space constrained environments.
Benefits for Semiconductor Fabs

The LF-134-CAN-ANT reduces both the technical and economic barriers to RFID retrofitting in existing semiconductor fabs. By combining multiple functions in a single device, installation effort and total system costs are measurably reduced.

  • Reduced cabling due to the integrated antenna and placement sensing.
  • Cost efficient retrofit of existing shelves, stockers, and conveyors.
  • High scalability by simply adding additional RFID readers to the CAN bus.
  • Space saving integration without mechanical modifications to existing systems.
Application Areas

The LF-134-CAN-ANT is used in semiconductor fabs to identify wafer cassettes and material carriers. Typical applications include RFID retrofits of shelves, stockers, and conveyors, as well as integration into new logistics systems.
The RFID reader is also suitable for equipment manufacturers who want to extend their products with a standardized RFID retrofit option.
