Turn complexity into clarity: RFID is the first step on your automation journey.
Fabmatics delivers smart identification solutions that scale with your fab.
Small, Smart, Simple: Automating Your Fab Starts with Reliable Identification
Many semiconductor fabs still rely on manual or paper-based tracking to manage materials, carriers, and tools – making it harder to scale and prone to errors.
RFID offers the digital foundation for all downstream automation steps:
Accurate identification and tracking of wafers, carriers, and equipment
Real-time process visibility
Error reduction and increased fab throughput
Seamless integration into existing MES and tool landscapes
Digital identification isn’t a future goal – it’s the starting point.
Common Questions Fab/Production Managers Ask Before Starting With RFID
Questions fab or automation managers ask before moving forward:
We want to automate, but where do we start?
Automation starts with visibility. RFID gives you real-time control over lots, carriers, and WIP – across tools, transport, and storage. Without this foundation, higher-level automation (like AMHS, MCS, robotics) becomes risky or impossible.
Will RFID work with the carriers and tools we already use?
Yes – Fabmatics RFID solutions are retrofit-ready. We work with HA200 boxes, FOUPs, SMIF pods, open cassettes, and reticle carriers. Tags can be welded, clipped, or mounted based. We also retrofit tools, racks, loadports, and stockers to support identification seamlessly.
How do I make sure RFID integrates with our existing fab software?
Our RFID readers use standard industrial protocols like SECS/GEM, ASCII, or IRG, and connect smoothly with MES, MCS, or tool host systems. We help evaluate your infrastructure and ensure compatibility with your existing workflow and interfaces.
What RFID technology is right for our environment?
We support LF and HF systems optimized for cleanroom conditions and different process zones. The choice depends on factors like tag position, material flow, environmental interference, and range requirements. We help you select the right technology and frequency.
Do we need to store custom data on the RFID tags?
It depends on your use case. Most fabs use a Unique ID, linked to backend data in the MES. In specific workflows, Fabmatics can also enable writable tags to hold local process data or tool-specific tracking. We help you define what's needed – and what isn’t.

From Tag to Control - Your Path to Fab Automation
Every journey toward an efficient and automated production begins with a first step – and in semiconductor manufacturing, that step is reliable digital identification. Even small improvements in how materials, carriers, and tools are identified and tracked can unlock greater transparency, reduce errors, and lay the foundation for smarter logistics and process automation.
Each step builds on identification. RFID comes first.
We will be happy to advise you on RFID strategies, retrofit solutions or pilot projects – individually and practically. Need a custom solution? We tailor systems to your tools, carrier types, and data interfaces – down to the finest detail.
